2008 - 2009
Araucania Yarns, a yarn processing startup in Chile, is seeking advice on diversifying their product offering and identifying other business opportunities. They are also interested in conducting a SWOT analysis to assess the feasibility of proposed options.
Extending client base: The main problem Araucania faces is that they only have a limited number of distributors who exercise monopoly buyer power, therefore stunting the growth and scalability of their business. It hopes to become a world class provider through developing partnerships with such reputable companies as Polo Ralph Lauren and United Colors of Benetton.
To date, Araucania Yarns sells through distributors only to the niche market of knitters, but it plans to start selling directly to at least one of the top name brands by 2009, because today, even high-end designer apparel is made from industrial dyed yarns. Araucania's goal is to penetrate this high-end market and see its own brand of hand-dyed yarns in conjunction with such brand names.
The Project team will explore business opportunities and explore export markets in the USA and Europe. Deliverables include business plans, SWOT analysis and any other relevant documentation.

The company Araucania Yarns is the only Chilean exporter of hand-dyed knitting yarns. Their unique color combinations, innovative dying techniques, carefully chosen yarns and ethnic branding have won a growing legion of fans around the world and is tapping into the resurgence of knitting as a hip hobby. Currently the local market represents 3 - 5% of Araucania Yarns sales, principally to a specialized carpet manufacturer. Chile is not considered relevant as part of Araucania Yarns' future growth strategy, where it will concentrate on wholesale distributors located in countries where there is a critical mass of consumers.
