CGC is making last minute preparations for its upcoming Kenya trip,
which will take place towards the end of March. Twenty students will
spend a week in Nairobi, splitting their time between meetings with
NGOs, volunteering activities, and some sightseeing. Groups we will
meet with will include Family Health International to discuss their
HIV/AIDS programs, Global Alliance for Africa to hear about microfinance
needs in Kenya, and HoneyCare to learn about successful sustainable
development models. The team will also meet with the US Ambassador
and spend time volunteering at a local orphanage. Since no trip to
Africa is complete without a safari, CGC will have the opportunity
to spend some time in the brush at Amboselli.
- December 2006
The various CGC committees gave their mid-term presentations in December, where they outlined their progress-to-date and the next steps each was going to take. The Millennium Promise team delivered their findings so far on the investment facility they have been designing, and the Clinton Foundation team described their research regarding the roll-out of circumcision clinics in Kenya and Swaziland.
In addition, the travel teams discussed upcoming Spring Break plans to visit Kenya and the exciting itinerary they had compiled for CGC members and the Chicago Booth community.
- Michael Diamond, President of World Resources Chicago, spoke to Chicago Booth students regarding the need for corporate social responsibility. Michael catalogued how various corporations are beginning to do well by "doing good," and how this is fast becoming a competitive differentiator in the marketplace. An article on Michael's talk can be found here.
- October 2006
Robert Dintruff, Director of Global Care Initiatives at Abbott Laboratories, gave an interesting talk on how Big Pharma is paying more attention to following its "social conscience," even if it means that the profits are not there. Specifically discussing the need to tackle the HIV/AIDS problem in Africa, Robert outlined several approaches that can lead to successful outcomes. An article on Robert's talk can be found here.

The CGC team just returned from an incredible spring

who were on the exciting trip (article
#2 and #3).
- January 2006
On Wednesday, January 11th, Chicago Global Citizens (CGC) hosted Chicago Booth Alumni and Friends in downtown Chicago for a cocktail and dinner reception featuring John Wood, Founder and CEO of Room to Read. Over 40 people attended, and a significant amount of donations were raised, bringing CGC's total amount of funds collected for education in Cambodia to $15,000. The CGC Co-Chairs would like to thank everyone who participated for making the event a huge success.
- 2005
The MFI Consulting Project recently reached the halfway point, and
the team is beginning to identify the core initiatives that will enable
the MFI to achieve its operating goals.
- On November 14th, students on the MFI Consulting Project presented their research on the current operating environment facing microfinance institutions in Cambodia. This research established a fact base of knowledge on the MFI's strategy, Cambodian financial needs, and global microfinance trends to guide the team's work going forward.
- CGC had an event at the Cambodian Association of Illinois, where members learned more about the history of Cambodia. The event included a tour through their museum and discussions with its founders.
- John Wood, Founder/CEO of Room to Read, encouraged Chicago Booth students to "think big from day one."
